Race Results 2000-01

The 2000-2001 Grand Prix season is now complete.  Results and short write-ups appear below from throughout the season.

The races that were selected were as below:

Race 1 - Keswick Half Marathon

The Keswick Half Marathon was the first event, and was run in very hot conditions on Sunday May the 7th around Lake Derwentwater. I am told that runners were dropping by the wayside throughout, and that is reflected in the finishing times. After hearing about it, I was almost pleased to have missed it through injury.

Race 2 - Club Handicap 14th May 2000

The Club Handicap race was next up, and was held on a beautiful Sunday morning with conditions excellent for running. There was a slight breeze from the south, which made the return half of the race a touch on the warm side, but who's complaining? The event was won by Keith Robson, who bettered his predicted time by almost three minutes to win by 40 seconds or so from Kenn Reay, with Dave Kitching close behind Kenn. It was good to see several new faces taking part in the race; I hope this is the start of a new trend. Full results:

Race 3: Blaydon Race - June 9th 2000

Another race run in near perfect conditions, and another increase in entries (2916) resulted in a very enjoyable run from The Toon to Blaydon. I think the atmosphere at the start of this race is better than all the others put together. Many Club members were in evidence, most were running but lots were watching too, and Robbie Barklay led home the 77 BRC runners (2 more than last year), with Cath Young first lady.  Rob Hall was 3rd Gadgie O50, Ian Richardson was 4th Gadgie O50, Denis Moss was 2nd Gadgie O70, Anne Potts was 4th Dame O45, and Cath and George placed 5th in the Me an Wor Lass category. Click here for the full race results, the BRC results are as below:

Race 4 - Tynedale 10k - July 5th 2000

Yet another race run in near perfect conditions, and yet another reported increase in entries (473); this isn't what we're all used to, but very welcome all the same.  Once again a large contingent of Club members were running, and Robbie Barklay led home the 49 BRC runners in 24th place overall, with Cath Young first lady (and 5th L45).  Rob Hall was 5th V50, Ian Richardson was 6th V50, Michael Stott was first U18, Denis Moss was 1st V70. For the Ladies Shiela Greener was 1st L50, Suzanne Humphrey was 2nd L35, and Helen Morris was 6th L35. Full BRC results and Grand Prix points are as below:

Race 5 - Northumberland Coastal Run 14m - July 16th 2000

Possibly the best conditions for this race in quite a few years, with the tide out and a following wind, ensured fast times for a number of runners.  Once again a large contingent of Club members were running; first home for BRC was Rob Hall in 23rd, first Lady was Anne Best. Special mention for Ron Ingram, who pulled his hamstring by slipping on a wet rock after only 100 metres but continued on to Craster thinking he would be able to get a lift from somebody spectating. As nobody was there he carried on to the finish - and missed the next   week's training as a result. I don't know if any of our runners won category prizes, but the full BRC results and Grand Prix points are as below:

Race 6 - Morpeth 10k - August 1st  2000

Very warm for this one, around the two loops with that nasty hill in the first mile of each lap just to make it more interesting for us, nevertheless the entry held steady from last year (exactly steady at 259!). 41 BRC runners took part and were led home by Robbie Barklay in 17th position, with Cath Young first Lady, just two seconds ahead of Anne Potts. Again, I don't know if any of our runners picked up category prizes, but here's the full list:

Race 7 - Blyth Links 10k - Tuesday 5th September 2000

Another nice evening, (and being included in the NSPoly race series) resulted in the highest recorded turnout for this event, up from 150 last year to 176 this time. First home from our own 48 runners was Robbie, with Rob taking the Brian Stringfellow trophy for first BRC vet. Cath Young was first BRC lady, and second overall. The full results are on another page, but the BRC placings were as below.

Tynedale 10m - 8th October

Eighth event in the Grand Prix was at Tynedale; first of the 38 BRC runners home was Andy Henderson, making his debut in a Blyth Vest. Not a bad way to start!  Rob Hall was 2nd V50, Joe Frazer was 4th V50, with Sheila Greener 1st LV50 and Suzanne Humphrey 4th LV35 for the Ladies. The total race turnout was 310, which was up from last year's 290; full BRC results are as below:

Brampton to Carlisle 10m - 18th November

Ninth event in the Grand Prix was at the Brampton to Carlisle; first of the 38 BRC runners home was Robbie Barkley, the only BRC runner to dip below the hour mark into the strong headwind. Ian Richardson was 5th V50, and Denis Moss 4th V70. Pride of place goes to the Ladies; Anne Potts, Cath Young and Helen Morris placed 4th, 5th and 7th in their respective categories, taking both the Ladies and the Veteran Ladies team prizes. The total race turnout was 512, which was down from last year's 541; full BRC results are as below:

Morpeth to Newcastle 1st January 2001

Blyth entries were up on last year, but the total for the race was down from 821 to 611. I am told that it seemed like there were twice as many BRC members spectating (and encouraging the runners) than were actually taking part. First back for us was Robbie Barkley in 50th place, and first lady home was Sheila Greener in 22nd. I don't know if we picked up any prizes or not, but here's the full results:

Brass Monkey Half Marathon -  28th January 2001

Included in the Grand Prix as a replacement for the Eyemouth event, this was somewhat difficult to get an entry for, as some Members will testify to. Blyth entries were down on the other events, probably due to the distance from here to York. Officially the entry is limited to 1,000, but there were still 1,089 finishers listed on their website. I am told that weather conditions were good and that the course was nice and flat, resulting in some good runs. First back for us was new member Glen Talvert in 72nd place, and first lady home was Anne Potts. Congratulations to the following, who have won their respective Leagues: Robbie Barkley, Steve Gillespie, Aynsley Herron and Pauline Cunningham. Division four is going right to the wire! I don't know if we picked up any prizes or not, but here's the BRC results:

Winter Series: times and Grand Prix points

Organised by Dave Kitching and Andy Brown, the Grand Prix points are worked out by adding the four fastest times together. 60 people took part in one or more race, and a very impressive 44 people took part in 5 or more of them. This was the final event in the Grand Prix, the full tables are shown on another page, and the point scores and placings for the Winter Series are also on show elsewhere on the site.
