Race 3 - Sunderland Half Marathon – Sun 4th May 2014
Sunday 4th May saw the running of the 3rd race in this
year’s Grand Prix series. A recent spate of injuries and an unfortunate clash
with the 1st Senior T&F Meeting of the season meant neither event was
attended to its full potential. The Half Marathon of the North was also a
pricey fixture which again was a factor in the low turnout; that said those who
made the trip to Sunderland were treated to a well organised event with a good
level of support on closed roads.
The
race began outside of the Stadium of Light and headed out over the Wearmouth Bridge. The course headed in and out of the city on
various routes providing a mixture of city and residential scenery which was
surprisingly undulating in places. The route looped back on itself in places giving
the opportunity to shout encouragement to other BRC runners. At about the 10
mile mark a Sikh wedding party had turned out and gave the runners massive
applause as they passed. At 11 miles the course headed through Roker Park which provided a welcome change of scenery
before leading on to the last uphill stage back over Wearmouth
Bridge to the stadium.
Divisions
1 and 2 had a single runner competing so maximum points were collected by Lee Cuthbertson in Div 1 (first home for Blyth) and Steven
French (pb) in Div 2. Division 3 was more competitive
with Martin Scott, David Potts, Heather Christopher and Mark Ponton turning out and finishing in that order (with Mark
missing out on an equal pb by 1 second). In Division
4 Mal Welch (1st HM) and Hayley Raithby took the
points and in Division 5 Claire Mason (pb) also had
it all her own way and picked up maximum points.
There
were also 6 BRC runners not competing in the Grand Prix who ran. Adele (pb) and Davina Lonsdale recorded
identical times and were followed home by Andrew Grieves, Sonia Miller (1st HM),
Lynn Munro (1st HM) and Alison Lowes.
