RACE RESULTS 1999-2000

The 1999-2000 Grand Prix season is now complete; 53 people entered, and competed in 12 races throughout 1999 and the first part of this year.  Results and short write-ups appear below from throughout the season as the races took place.

Links 10k   Derwentside 10m   Tynedale 10m   Club Handicap   Eyemouth Half Marathon

Brampton to Carlisle 10m   Blyth Sands Race (not in GP)

2000:    Morpeth to Newcastle 14m   Redcar Half Marathon

Blaydon Race - 9th June 1999

The Blaydon Race was the first event in the Grand Prix, on the 9th of June as ever. This year's event attracted a record number of entrants, and the good weather conditions helped to see both the men's and women's course records broken. First lad home for Blyth from the 75 who took part, was Andy Brown in 20th place, and Jacqui Lumsden led our lasses home in a time of 38:57. Dave Kitching was fourth V55, and Denis Moss won the V70 category. In the "Me and wor lass" category George and Cath Young placed fifth. Gareth Hope just missed getting his name in the paper by finishing fifth U19 out of 50. Well done to you all.

Newburn River Run - 16th June 1999

Another Wednesday, another very pleasant evening, and another category 'A' race for the second event of the season, the Newburn River Run.  This race is on a bit smaller scale to last week's Blaydon Race, and is run over a much different type of course, along the river between Newburn and Wylam, and very enjoyable it is too (apart from the steps up to the bridge at the end!).  Once again it was Andy Brown who led home the 43 strong Blyth contingent in 6th place, and Jacqui Lumsden who was first Blyth lady home. Jacqui was 7th Lady, Anne Best was 1st L45, Helen Morris was 3rd L35. Perhaps best of all, Denis Moss won the M70 category wearing ordinary walking shoes after his wife had "tidied up" his running shoes from the boot of his car where he kept them!

Northumberland Coastal Run - 18th July 1999

For the first time anybody could remember it wasn't a sunny day for the Northumberland Coastal Run, the first category 'C' race, however it didn't spoil the event as the combination of the damp conditions, lack of any real wind, and the tide being two hours down the beach all helped to make conditions ideal for running.  First home for Blyth was Rob Hall out of the 42 who took part, with Jacqui Lumsden first back for the ladies.  I don't know who the category prizewinners were as the result sheet shows only two categories each for ladies and men; however Rob was shown as 4th M1 and Jacqui was in the first ten ladies.  The entry was marginally down (819)on last year (835).  On a personal note I'd like to thank Stephen Inglis from Alnwick for his support as we ran the course together, and to wish him all the best for his Marathon debut this winter in the "Big Apple".   I didn't get the feeling back in my legs until Wednesday morning but I still enjoyed every step!

Morpeth 10k - 3rd August 1999

This was my first time for this event, the Morpeth 10k, the third in category 'A', and everybody had warned me about the hill near the start of each lap; I should have taken more notice, as I really struggled around for the first of the two laps. The weather conditions were very humid with hardly a breeze blowing; most people I spoke to afterwards felt this had cost them some time as it felt quite hot for running - perfect conditions don't exist, as we all know! First home for Blyth was Andy Brown out of the 44 who took part, with Jacqui Lumsden again first back for the ladies. John Miller and Gareth Hope both kept their perfect Grand Prix records going, although Andy and George have both won all of their races, they have each missed one event. The BRC category prizewinners were Andy Brown (7th), Rob Hall (3rd M45), Joe Frazer (2nd M50), and Cath Young (2nd F35).  The entry was up to 259 from 212 last year.

Links 10k - 31st August

I was away for the last category 'A' event, the Links 10k, so I don't know many details, but first home for Blyth out of the 39 BRC runners who took part, was Andy Brown, with Jacqui Lumsden again first back for the ladies. John Miller, Gareth Hope and Andy Brown all kept their perfect Grand Prix records going, although Andy has missed one event. The entry was up to 150 from 128 last year. The race was won for the second year running by Mark Brown of Morpeth, son of our own Tony.

Derwentside 10 miles - 12th September

After five events, it was time for the first of the category 'B' races, the Derwentside 10 miles. I didn't run this event, so once again I don't know many details, except for the memory of running it last year, which left quite an impression on me. This is far and away the hardest course I have ever done, and this is once again reflected in everybody's times. I am told that even Andy, (who finished in second place) had considered dropping out at one stage. I wish I could "struggle round" in under an hour... Anyway first home for Blyth was Andy Brown out of the 24 who took part, with Jacqui Lumsden again first back for the ladies. The three perfect scoring records continued with John Miller, Gareth Hope and Andy Brown all leading their divisions home. The entry was up to 150 from 128 last year - maybe people aren't put off by the course, or are their memories short?

Tynedale 10 miles - 19th September

The seventh event, and second category 'B' race, was the Tynedale 'Jelly Tea' 10 miles. The weather for this event was not ideal, with quite a strong easterly wind in our faces right from the start - this was reflected in the finishing times. It rained after about 45 minutes too, so I've had better days. First home for Blyth in 6th place  was Andy Brown out of the 34 who took part, with Jacqui Lumsden again first back for the ladies, in 5th place. Rob Hall took 1st V45; Joe Frazer was 2nd V50; Denis Moss was 1st V70; Shiela Greener was 1st LV45; Kath Glynn 2nd LV45;  the Club also picked up prizes in both of the team sections. Gareth Hope's perfect scoring record continued and with John Miller away on holiday, Gareth is now the only person to have been first in each race to date. Division 2 has had 5 different winners from the 7 races. The entry was down to 290  from 362 last year - maybe everybody else was at St. James' Park?

Club Handicap 3rd October

The eighth event, and third category 'B' race, was the Club Handicap 8 miles. The weather for this event was excellent, considering the weather forecast,  with a north-easterly wind in our faces for the return leg up the Links. The threatened rain never came either, so I think we got off quite lightly. First home was Kevin Westwood out of the 39 who took part, with Eddie Woods second and Christine Willshire third. Fastest man on the day was none other than Andy Brown, in 43:30, and fastest Lady was Jacqui Lumsden in 54:45. Rob Hall was fastest Vet. Kevin Westwood rounded off an excellent result by taking away Gareth Hope's perfect scoring record and dropping Gareth to second place for the first time this season. Division 2 continued to spread the winning runners around - there have now been 6 different winners from the 8 races. The entry was up from last year's 33 to 39 this year. Well done to Ron for his handicapping once again.

Eyemouth Half Marathon 31st October

The ninth event, and second category 'C' race, was the Eyemouth Half Marathon. Most Club members were running this race for the first time so didn't know quite what to expect out on the course, with rumours of some nasty climbs doing the rounds on the bus journey up. The weather for this event was amazing, it was mild, sunny and dry and I have never known such a strong tailwind for a point to point course - out of the 28 BRC runners who lined up, no less than TEN recorded new PB's! (see below).  Most noteable were Robbie Barkley who   reduced his PB by nearly ten minutes to 1:18:39, and Sharon Percy, who knocked nine minutes off her time from this year's GNR. Fastest man on the day was Rob Hall, who also took the V45 first prize; fastest Lady was Jacqui Lumsden with Anne Best taking the first LV45 trophy. The entry was up again; it has increased in each of the three years since the race was reinstated, but I think they plan to limit entries to around 300 for next year as the bar can't hold many more people than the amount who sqeezed in this time.

Brampton to Carlisle November 20th

The tenth event, and last category 'B' race, was the Brampton to Carlisle 10m. The weather for this event was generally declared to be perfect, with only a slight breeze from the side to help keep everbody cool. The days before the race had been terrible, with wind and rain to go with the almost freezing temperatures. First home was Andy Brown in 14th place, Rob Hall was 5th V45, Denis Moss was 2nd V70, fastest lady was Jacqui Lumsden in 9th, Anne Best was 5th LV45 and Cath Young 4th LV40; the three ladies took the 2nd team prize behind Chester-le-Street. Worth a mention was Robbie Barkley, who went under the hour for the first time. The entry was almost exactly the same as last year, apparently they took a lot on the day (probably on account of the good weather).

Blyth Sands Race   December 5th

Not in the Grand Prix this time around, but still our second biggest event of the year, the Sands Race attracted 122 runners for the 40th running of the event. Conditions were very good for running, and everything went off smoothly, although it was a close call for finishers with the tide coming in at the end almost resulting in the finish area having to be moved. For the second year in a row, the race was won by Walter Ryder of Morpeth Harriers. The team prize was won by Kath, Anne, Rob and Cath with 41 points to Morpeth's 55 and Elvet's 57 - well done!

Morpeth to Newcastle  January 1st

I didn't run it myself, but the conditions were reported to be very good for this, the 97th running of this race. Entries were up on last year, but not as much as had been anticipated - maybe people had just planned to party all day...  Anyway a smaller than usual BRC contingent did run, and the times and Grand Prix points were as below.

Redcar Half Marathon - 26th March

Traditionally the last event in the Grand Prix, the Redcar event drew another season to a close. There were two incorrect dates printed in the running press for the race before it actually took place, so nobody knew for certain when it would be run until around four weeks beforehand. In the event, this late announcement of the date meant that several of our runners had already arranged to run at Coniston the day before; once Andy Brown had arranged to run there, all the GP prizes were already sorted out before this race started.  Anyway back to the race, I am told conditions were better than they had been in recent years, although the number of finishers continues to fall - down to 545 from last year's 673. Twenty runners from BRC turned up (last year 26), and were led home by new Club champion Rob Hall in 12th place, with Cath Young first BRC lady home as 4th vet. BRC men were 3rd team behind Mandale and Hartlepool, with Rob, Adam and Neal scoring 70 points. Despite finishing first and second, Chester-le-Street actually finished 9th team, after their third runner came in 178th!

Congratulations to the four division winners - Rob Hall, Eddie Stott, John Miller and Gareth Hope, and to all the people who took second and third placings. Rob Hall also took the "Age Related" prize, I will be publishing the full results for this in due course.
