Club Handicap Race

3rd October 1999

It was a pleasure to organise the twelfth running of this race which has now been recognised as an important part of the club by once again being voted part of the Grand Prix.
This year's event was moved to October to help spread the Grand Prix events out a bit and this resulted in an increase in entries over last year, up to 39 from 33; this figure included Dave Kitching, who unfortunately had to drop out soon after the start due to respiratory problems. He was OK enough to be out running the following evening though.
This is a difficult race to organise because runners at the front are often spurred on by the fact that they are in the lead whereas in a normal race some runners can lose heart when they are falling back in the field. Therefore performances by high handicapped runners are quite often above their usual standard. That was borne out by the exellent runs by the first five in the race who all looked tired at the finish, but were a credit to the Club by their efforts.
Kevin Westwood took the lead on the Links with around a mile to go and finished well to win by just under 30 seconds from Eddie Woods, with Christine Willshire in third place. Coming next was Joe Potts, then Pauline Cunningham, and in sixth place Robbie Barkley. Andy Brown was once again fastest on the day having started off from back mark, with Jacqui Lumsden fastest lady.
Because it was a Grand Prix event everyone gave their all and I thank them for that, especially Joe Frazer, who broke the over 50's course record set by Derek Robinson in 1995. Joe's new mark of 49.47 improved on Derek's time by a margin of 54 seconds, congratulations to him on a fine effort.
A special thanks to all who helped make this a succesful race and I look forward to next year's handicap being included in the Grand Prix.

P.S. A number of years ago Michael Cole got a lot of "stick" for going the wrong way in the Autumn Relays; in this race there were TWO people who lost their way - Rob Hall, and Ian Richardson who each took wrong turns near the Delaval Arms, losing valuable time.
Can anyone help? Do I need to supply guide dogs, white sticks, a paper trail, a blue line (as in other great races), police outriders or even satellite tracking?
