Newburn River Run

[Wed 20th Jun]

This one always seems well attended, organised by Elswick Harriers and at a distance of approximately 6.5 miles over the same course as previous years.  The route is on tarmac/good footpaths and is mainly very flat.  The weather always seems favourable and this time was no exception as it was a warm evening.

It was obvious to see that Wallsend and Alnwick had this one in their Grand Prix with an excellent turnout by both.  For Blyth we had a nice number too.  With Jon and Steven French, Ralph and Myself for the gentlemen, Susanne, Cath, Heather, Julie, Davina and Hayley for the ladies.

The course follows the river banks on both sides near Newburn, starting and finishing at the leisure centre.  Good facilities of a bar, showers and a sandwich are offered at the end.  The prizes are quite generous although it is disappointing to see Elswick adopting the same system as some other clubs in offering complete sets of male prizes to all age categories but a limited number to the ladies.

However, well done to Susanne in winning the over 45 ladies section and to Jon for being first Blyth back.  A good night was had by all.

Many thanks to our Dave Kitching who encouraged us throughout, although after Sunday’s efforts in the Keswick Marathon it was always going to be “interesting”.
