Predictor Race 2012

[Mon 24th Sep]

The Winners
It was a struggle to find a date for this race and eventually it was decided to hold it on the Tuesday after the Great North Run (11th September), although technically a race, you can run it at any pace you wish.  Last year's race was held along the Heathery Lonnen, so all the people who had been timing themselves on that stretch of road were disappointed as this year's route started outside the Waterford Arms at Seaton Sluice, then along the dunes path to the farm, then back along the road towards Seaton Sluice, back onto the Dunes path at the toilet block at Gloucester Lodge and then back to the Waterford Arms – a distance of three miles.

Although as I said, nobody could say for definite as no electronic aids were allowed during the run, the predicted times showed that some people were running hard, while others were just taking it easy.  The number of entries was also up this year and 38 runners were soon set off heading towards Blyth on a bright sunny evening with a slight breeze.

For the record Robbie Barkley was first back (some 32 seconds faster than he predicted), with Calum Storey next (39 seconds faster).  Of the 38 runners, only ten were slower than they predicted.

Several people were less than 10 seconds outside their predicted time (Steve, Ron, Graham, Jordan), while Dave Roberts was only three seconds adrift but Dave Bradley trumped them all by being only 1 second out!

This year we introduced a Wooden Spoon Trophy for the furthest away and although several people were just over one minute outside there was a clear winner in Louise Coultate who was three minutes and 20 seconds faster than she predicted.

While the results were being calculated, there was a quiz in the Waterford Arms and the team “two Dumb Blondes” proved not so dumb after all as they won the key rings and chocolates( although their maths does leave something to be desired as there should have only been 4 in a team).

Many thanks to Clair Stewart, Steff and Charlotte Ramsay, Bethan, Christine Willshire and Eileen Cox who all helped on the evening.
