Track & Field Heat 1 -
Following on from the successive debut of Blyth as part of a joint team with Wallsend in last year's Northern T&F League when the combined team finished in third place, the merger has continued into 2010, with the first of this season's four events in division 4E East having taken place at a cool, breezy Churchill Playing Fields, Whitley Bay on Saturday 1st May.
With all seven competing teams seemingly low on numbers, many athletes had to take part in numerous events in order to pick up as many points as possible for their teams. Many Blyth/Wallsend athletes took part in unusual events and some participated in events for the first time, particularly the field events.
For Blyth, the highlights were from Craig Birch (2nd= 100m 'A'; 2nd 200m 'A' and 1st in the 'A; triple jump), Scott Povey who is still an U17 (3rd 400m 'A'), Helen Morris (1st 3000m 'A'), Sharon Richardson (2nd hammer 'A'), Steph Ramsey (2nd= 100m 'A'), Susanne Hunter (2nd 1500m 'B'), and Kirstie Johnson who is also an U17 (2nd in both the high jump 'A' and long jump 'A').
These results, together with the terrific first places for the following Wallsend athletes, Mick Baker (5000m 'B'), Paul Waller (triple jump 'B'), Kerry Bentham (400m 'B'), Danielle Hodgkinson (1500 'A'), Emma Osborne (hammer 'B'), and Crystal Skeldon (3000m 'B' and triple jump 'B'), helped the combined Blyth/Wallsend team to first place overall on the day. Both clubs would like to thank all the athletes who took part in the event and helped to give us such an excellent start to this year's competition.
If any club members would like to participate in any of the
remaining 3 fixtures then please inform

Most people should be aware of the club web-site:
This will gradually replace the old senior and
junior web-sites so that we just have one point of information. Anybody who has
anything to report should let Steve Walker know.
We also have a Facebook group (this probably doesn’t
mean anything to anybody over 25) but to everybody else it does.

Track etiquette
As more Seniors and
Juniors compete at track nowadays it maybe useful to read this
The
in-field is out of bounds unless you are a competitor or an official in the
event in session. This means that, if you are late for your event, you have
to walk around the outside. Tedious, but potentially life saving. Remember
that most of the implements in the throwing events used to be weapons of war!
Think
of others who are competing - don't make a noise near the start or the areas
where the field events are taking place. If you
are being lapped, move out into the second or third lane to let the leaders
through. If you don't, chances are they won't be saying "Hi" when
they pass you. It will be a bit stronger. Don't ever
cross the finishing line unless you are participating in a race. It actually
does disrupt the timekeepers and plays havoc on the electronic timing. Be
polite to the officials - you need them more than they need you. Responsibility
is the order of the day. If the programme is running behind, don't assume
that your event will be late. Organisers usually do their best to keep
programmes on time and catch up where they fall behind. If in doubt, ask the
meeting organiser. The
steeplechase water jump is not a swimming pool. Similarly, the high jump mats
are for landing on, not partying on. You
would look both ways before crossing a road. Do the same on the track - a
sprinter might not hit you as hard as a car, but it will still hurt. Remember
that tracks are for racing on. If you are warming up, keep in mind that there
are races going on and they may be using all the lanes. If you are not racing
or warming up, don't stand on the track. |

The
importance of speed
If you ask most runners what speed work is, they’ll probably tell you that they do 10x200m with 1 minute rest. Is this really running at speed? Or is it just running fast? Of course it isn’t speed work, it’s not even speed endurance. Any work on speed must be done at 100% effort and it is impossible to keep this up for more than 8-10 seconds, the same applies to speed endurance. So 60-80m is as far as you should be running for one repetition when training for speed, and plenty of recovery time is necessary (1 minute for every 10m of sprinting). Obviously if the session goal is speed endurance then recovery time will decrease slightly or the number of reps per set can be increased.
A good example of a speed session is 3x(3x30m) with 3 minutes recovery between reps and 5 minutes between sets. This is only a total of 270m running, but at 100% effort, and even 30m at 100% is tiring.
So why is speed so important? There are 3 energy systems that we use when competing and we must train all of them. ATP-CP is the energy system we use when exercising for 10 seconds or less. Anaerobic lactic is the energy system we use when running for up to a minute and anything longer than that is aerobic. Although it’s true that the further the distance you run, the less vital speed becomes, it is still a necessary component for the complete runner. We still use all 3 energy systems during a race so it is important to train all 3 energy systems separately to prepare them for competition, which is after all the reason that the majority of us train. Therefore by working on speed we train the ATP-CP energy system. In a 10k race, for example, this is used at both the start and finish of a race for reacting quickly to the gun and one of the most important weapons of an endurance athlete...the sprint finish.
Speed can’t be achieved by simply running as fast as you can, it is a skill and must be learned by practicing specific drills and executing the correct running technique. In fact, by running with the correct technique you will find it easier to run at speed and the faster you will accelerate. By not training at full speed your capacity to run at full speed will decrease. Speed should be the first thing that any runner learns if they want to be able to compete at the “top end” of races, especially with junior athletes.

All races start at
7:15 prompt at Links Car Park,
South Beach. |
This year the
Summer Cup is a series of four 2.5 mile handicap races for members of Blyth
Running Club only. The main event is for individuals, with the overall
winner being decided on their total of all 4 results. There is also a
team event in order to provide a bit more competition. The course starts
and finishes at Blyth Links car park and follows a route using the promenade
and the beach path, and so is safe for all ages. The handicapping system allows
all ages from the Club to compete and so seniors and juniors can both take
part, with everyone having an equal chance of victory.
The races are held on Monday and Wednesday evenings through late May to early
September.

Chairman’s Report
Since
the last meeting the club has been well represented by its members in many
varied events at local, regional and national level in cross country and on the
road.
It
was especially pleasing to see the men retain their division 2 status in the
final cross country at Prudhoe and it was a proud moment indeed to see the
Under 15 Boys team come 1st in the Good Friday Races at Newburn.
I’m
sure the captains will give more detailed information about individual
performances later in the meeting.
The
next month sees the club involved with 3 important events;
