Our continuing mission: to boldly drivel where no running publication has drivelled before.

ODDS & SODS

Coaching Sessions

High Jump Coaching, There is a dedicated high jump training session every Friday night at Monkton Stadium, Jarrow from 18:00 - 19:45.  Sue Skirrow also runs one at Alnwick on a Friday 16:00

Pole Vaulting, we have already had one session and more can be arranged if required

Anyone wanting further details on any of the above, see Keith

Family Day

It is the intention of the social committee to organise the above event on a very informal basis and to this end Ron Ingram has spoken to the landlord of The Fishing Boat Inn who is delighted we are interested in using the pub on Monday the 31st May as a base to this family outing. He will be serving food as well as snacks, drinks and beverages etc., but Ron has advised that we do not want B-B-Q packs like last year. The landlord is happy to accommodate us and he will allow us to use the rear open area at the back of the pub and of course will welcome any trade this will bring on the day. The pub has a very nice conservatory which is used as a restaurant where meals and snacks can be taken, alternatively if the weather is good you may wish to bring your own food for consumption outside the pub but the landlord will want drinks to be purchased from the bar.

In order to take advantage of the landlords offer and hospitality Ron needs to know how many people are interested and if so do they want or are likely to eat within the premises? Those wanting to bring a picnic please let Ron know but please remember that you should be purchasing “some” drinks from the bar.

Anybody interested let Ron Ingram or Ralph or Keith know

2010 Handicap Results

Seniors held their annual 6.5 mile handicap race on Wed 5th May, the route starts at the Beach Car Park, heads onto the promenade, then along the beach path, up Collywell Bay road, past the Delaval Arms pub, along the cliff tops to return to Collywell Bay road and then along the footpath next to the road back to Blyth.

For once conditions were good, with a cool temperature and very little wind as race organiser Dave Kitching and club chairman Kevin Freeman set Andrea Scott away at 7:15 pm, from then on it was a steady procession of runners until Paul Whalley set off some 29 minutes later.  Running strongly Andrea managed to hold onto her lead for the whole race and was never challenged or passed by any of the runners and came home a convincing winner. In second place was Davina Lonsdale, who herself was well clear of third place finisher Dave Bradley.

Fastest time on the night was recorded by Robbie Barkley with 37:07, and fastest lady was Susanne Hunter in a time of 45:36. Congratulations also to Adam Robinson and Terry McCabe who both knocked 30secs off the O40 and O60 course records respectively.

Track & Field Heat 1 - Churchill

Following on from the successive debut of Blyth as part of a joint team with Wallsend in last year's Northern T&F League when the combined team finished in third place, the merger has continued into 2010, with the first of this season's four events in division 4E East having taken place at a cool, breezy Churchill Playing Fields, Whitley Bay on Saturday 1st May.

With all seven competing teams seemingly low on numbers, many athletes had to take part in numerous events in order to pick up as many points as possible for their teams. Many Blyth/Wallsend athletes took part in unusual events and some participated in events for the first time, particularly the field events.

For Blyth, the highlights were from Craig Birch (2nd= 100m 'A'; 2nd 200m 'A' and 1st in the 'A; triple jump), Scott Povey who is still an U17 (3rd 400m 'A'), Helen Morris (1st 3000m 'A'), Sharon Richardson (2nd hammer 'A'), Steph Ramsey (2nd= 100m 'A'), Susanne Hunter (2nd 1500m 'B'), and Kirstie Johnson who is also an U17 (2nd in both the high jump 'A' and long jump 'A').

These results, together with the terrific first places for the following Wallsend athletes, Mick Baker (5000m 'B'), Paul Waller (triple jump 'B'), Kerry Bentham (400m 'B'), Danielle Hodgkinson (1500 'A'), Emma Osborne (hammer 'B'), and Crystal Skeldon (3000m 'B' and triple jump 'B'), helped the combined Blyth/Wallsend team to first place overall on the day. Both clubs would like to thank all the athletes who took part in the event and helped to give us such an excellent start to this year's competition.

If any club members would like to participate in any of the remaining 3 fixtures then please inform Ralph, the next event is on the 5th June at Middlesbrough.

Blyth Running Club On-Line

Most people should be aware of the club web-site:

www.blythrunningclub.org.uk

This will gradually replace the old senior and junior web-sites so that we just have one point of information. Anybody who has anything to report should let Steve Walker know.

We also have a Facebook group (this probably doesn’t mean anything to anybody over 25) but to everybody else it does.

A couple of other useful sites for checking your rankings are

www.powerof10.info

www.athleticsdata.com

Enter these sites and you can see where you rank in the country in your age group

Track etiquette

As more Seniors and Juniors compete at track nowadays it maybe useful to read this

Track etiquette for athletes

The in-field is out of bounds unless you are a competitor or an official in the event in session. This means that, if you are late for your event, you have to walk around the outside. Tedious, but potentially life saving. Remember that most of the implements in the throwing events used to be weapons of war!

Think of others who are competing - don't make a noise near the start or the areas where the field events are taking place.

If you are being lapped, move out into the second or third lane to let the leaders through. If you don't, chances are they won't be saying "Hi" when they pass you. It will be a bit stronger.

Don't ever cross the finishing line unless you are participating in a race. It actually does disrupt the timekeepers and plays havoc on the electronic timing. Be polite to the officials - you need them more than they need you.

Responsibility is the order of the day. If the programme is running behind, don't assume that your event will be late. Organisers usually do their best to keep programmes on time and catch up where they fall behind. If in doubt, ask the meeting organiser.

The steeplechase water jump is not a swimming pool. Similarly, the high jump mats are for landing on, not partying on.

You would look both ways before crossing a road. Do the same on the track - a sprinter might not hit you as hard as a car, but it will still hurt. Remember that tracks are for racing on. If you are warming up, keep in mind that there are races going on and they may be using all the lanes. If you are not racing or warming up, don't stand on the track.

The importance of speed

If you ask most runners what speed work is, they’ll probably tell you that they do 10x200m with 1 minute rest. Is this really running at speed? Or is it just running fast? Of course it isn’t speed work, it’s not even speed endurance. Any work on speed must be done at 100% effort and it is impossible to keep this up for more than 8-10 seconds, the same applies to speed endurance. So 60-80m is as far as you should be running for one repetition when training for speed, and plenty of recovery time is necessary (1 minute for every 10m of sprinting). Obviously if the session goal is speed endurance then recovery time will decrease slightly or the number of reps per set can be increased.

A good example of a speed session is 3x(3x30m) with 3 minutes recovery between reps and 5 minutes between sets. This is only a total of 270m running, but at 100% effort, and even 30m at 100% is tiring.

So why is speed so important? There are 3 energy systems that we use when competing and we must train all of them. ATP-CP is the energy system we use when exercising for 10 seconds or less. Anaerobic lactic is the energy system we use when running for up to a minute and anything longer than that is aerobic. Although it’s true that the further the distance you run, the less vital speed becomes, it is still a necessary component for the complete runner. We still use all 3 energy systems during a race so it is important to train all 3 energy systems separately to prepare them for competition, which is after all the reason that the majority of us train. Therefore by working on speed we train the ATP-CP energy system. In a 10k race, for example, this is used at both the start and finish of a race for reacting quickly to the gun and one of the most important weapons of an endurance athlete...the sprint finish.

Speed can’t be achieved by simply running as fast as you can, it is a skill and must be learned by practicing specific drills and executing the correct running technique. In fact, by running with the correct technique you will find it easier to run at speed and the faster you will accelerate. By not training at full speed your capacity to run at full speed will decrease. Speed should be the first thing that any runner learns if they want to be able to compete at the “top end” of races, especially with junior athletes.

All races start at 7:15 prompt at

Links Car Park, South Beach.

This year the Summer Cup is a series of four 2.5 mile handicap races for members of Blyth Running Club only.  The main event is for individuals, with the overall winner being decided on their total of all 4 results.  There is also a team event in order to provide a bit more competition.  The course starts and finishes at Blyth Links car park and follows a route using the promenade and the beach path, and so is safe for all ages. The handicapping system allows all ages from the Club to compete and so seniors and juniors can both take part, with everyone having an equal chance of victory.
The races are held on Monday and Wednesday evenings through late May to early September.

Minutes of meeting held 6th April 2010

Apologies: John Mallon

The meeting commenced at 7:35 p.m.

Emma Freeman was also in attendance to observe the committee process.

Minutes of meeting held 4th March 2010 were read and approved. This was proposed by Iain Singer and seconded by Helen Morris.

Matters Arising

Coaching certificates Ralph will have to send a further reminder that coaches need to supply details of their coaching certificates and CRB details.

Training sub-committee – Alison Lowes, Craig Birch, Aynsley Herron, Joe Frazer and Mal Darbyshire had agreed to be on the committee and ensure that the training should represent the different “abilities, gender and interests” within the club. The initial meeting had been postponed so a new meeting needs to be arranged ASAP. This date was agreed as being Wednesday 12th April.

Presentation Awards – Craig Birch has donated a trophy which will be used in the awards.

Club Personality – Ralph has sent an email informing the members that voting is either by email or paper copy.

Club Base – Still no response from the Rugby Club. Ralph will contact for feedback.

Chairman’s Report

Since the last meeting the club has been well represented by its members in many varied events at local, regional and national level in cross country and on the road.

It was especially pleasing to see the men retain their division 2 status in the final cross country at Prudhoe and it was a proud moment indeed to see the Under 15 Boys team come 1st in the Good Friday Races at Newburn.

I’m sure the captains will give more detailed information about individual performances later in the meeting.

The next month sees the club involved with 3 important events;

  • Sunday 25th April – Blyth Valley 10k.
  • Saturday 1st may – Northern Athletics Track & Field League Event 1 at Churchill Playing Fields, Whitley Bay.
  • Saturday 8th May – Presentation Night at the Seahorse, Blyth.

I urge all Blyth members to be mindful of the huge amount of support required to make all these events successful and enjoyable.

Beach Races

I was hoping to hold the beach races in June, but the two date’s available clash with Northumberland School Championships at Gateshead – hopefully some of the club runners will be there. I will try and get a date which doesn’t clash with anything else

Young Athletes League

The first fixture was at Monkton stadium on Sunday May 30th, against Birtley and Blaydon/Elswick. The match was won by a strong Blaydon side but as usual there were some encouraging performances from Blyth, with Jacob, Scott P, Michael Scott and Kalvin all winning events.

Handicap Race

This was originally due to be held on Monday 26th April, but as I was unavoidably detained in Florida it needs to be rescheduled. Unfortunately there are a lot of races coming up so it may well be June/July by the time we arrange it.

Quick Quiz

A man is sitting in a pub feeling rather poor. He sees the man next to him pull a wad of £50 notes out of his wallet.
He turns to the rich man and says to him,
"I have an amazing talent; I know almost every song that has ever existed."
The rich man laughs.
The poor man says, "I am willing to bet you all the money you have in your wallet that I can sing a genuine song with a lady's name of your choice in it."
The rich man laughs again and says, "OK, how about my daughter's name, Joanna Armstrong-Miller?"
The rich man goes home poor. The poor man goes home rich.

What song did he sing?
