2011 Report

This years race saw records broken galore, a record entry of almost 600 runners resulted in there being 511 finishers, beating the previous best of 426 from last year by some margin.  The runners were led home by Peter Newton of Morpeth Harriers, who smashed his own course record by nearly one minute, and the first lady, Lorna Young of Heaton Harriers, recorded the second best ever time for a lady.

In the early stages there was an initial group of 4- 5 runners who took up the pace, however by the three mile mark, Newton had a gap of over 40 yards between him and the group. Newton continued to work hard and won the race for the third time in a time of 30 minutes 33 seconds, over one minute in front of his clubmate  Ian Harding in second place, while Daniel Bradford of Shettleston managed to pull away from Ross Floyd in the last half mile to gain third.

The first Lady home was Lorna Young of Heaton Harriers who finished in 24th position overall with a time of 35:51, Tracey Milmore of Chester-Le-Street was second, with Stacey Rogers of Wallsend third.

First Blyth runner to finish and winner of the George Hall Trophy was Robbie Barkley followed by 16 year old Jake Jansen, while new member Julie Clark was the first Blyth lady.

As the race was run on ”Mothers Day”, the organisers arranged for a bouquet of flowers to be presented to the first mother to cross the finish line, this was Sonia Morley of Tynedale Harriers.

The race this year also incorporated the North East Counties Athletics Association 10k Championships and the 10k Road Champions for 2011 are Peter Newton of Morpeth and Tracey Milmore of Chester-Le-Street.

Blyth Running Club would like to thank everyone who took part in the race, the members of the club together with their family and friends who helped/marshaled on the day (instead of running), the officials and especially race organiser Dave Kitching.  Finally a huge thanks to all our sponsors, which included Transped, NCC, BVAL, Start Fitness, Herrons, John Gunn, Schweppes Abbey Well, The Quay Public House and St. Johns Ambulance for their assistance.

Over 150 of the finishers at the BV10K were unattached runners and Blyth Running Club would like anybody who is interested in running to try one of our training nights where they will be made welcome, details are on the Membership page.  We welcome runners of any age/ability, so if anyone is interested in coming along to training nights, or learning more about the club, then leave your name and contact number at Blyth Sports Centre and a member of the Club will contact you to discuss, or Blyth Running Club can be contacted by e-mail at enquiries@blythrunningclub.co.uk or ring 01670-362668
